Cornell University in Ithaca New York is the only Ivey league University to offer an undergraduate program in fashion design. It is through the department of Fiber Science and Apparel Design. Cornell is also the only University in the United States that offers a Ph.D. program in apparel design. Its approach is that it covers the knowledge base in this industry through applied science, technology, humanities, social sciences and physical sciences due to the human need for clothing. Throughout other universities in the U.S. the fashion design degrees may use alternative titles like “Apparel and Textiles” or “Textile Design.” Quite often they are hidden in the Art or Art History departments; if not they can be found in the Family and Consumer Studies departments.
